Math SL will allow you the opportunity to expand on the basic mathematical concepts you have previously learned. Math SL offers a broad range of topics and provides a sound background for students who anticipate future studies and careers in areas that involve mathematics such as chemistry, economics, psychology, and business administration. You will learn about many important mathematical concepts through the development of mathematical techniques. The focus will be on studying mathematical concepts in a comprehensive way without the need for insisting on the mathematical rigor required in Math HL. Whenever possible, the knowledge acquired will be used to solve realistic problems.

The Math SL curriculum consists of six topics:

- Algebra
- Functions and Equations
- Circular Functions and Trigonometry
- Vectors
- Statistics and Probability
- Calculus (topics covered in either AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC after completing the Math SL class)

These six core topics are shared with the Math HL course. However, the Math SL course does not have the depth that is found in the Math HL course. These topics are covered in Bellaire High School’s PreAP Algebra II, Math SL, and AP Calculus courses. After successfully completing the Math SL class, you will then take either AP Calculus AB or BC the following year when you take the Math SL exam. Most students taking Math SL will following this course sequence:

Grade 9 – PreAP Geometry

Grade 10 – PreAP Algebra 2

Grade 11 – Math SL

Grade 12 – AP Calculus AB or BC (Math SL exam taken in May)
